Frustrated doctor combats conspiracy theories
with open conversations

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Dr. Mike Bittenbender has heard it all from his unvaccinated patients.
“There are all kinds of conspiracy theories,”

Bittenbender is trying to encourage as many people as he can

The internet, plus a generation of old people who don't know how to fully use the technology, plus a lack of critical thinking skills, plus right wing echo-chambers which use algorithms to target susceptible people, has led to a kind of golden age of conspiracy theorists.

I don't think these people can be reasoned with. It's like they're in a cult. Notice how people like Billy don't fact-check basic things. Yesterday he was posting articles which lie about the two scientists they cite (the scientists advise people to get vaccines), or lie about the conclusions of an autopsy, or lie about the contents of a piece of legislation. One article literally ignored the conclusions of a scientist on his own study, to trust the misreadings propagated by a white supremacist. And today I notice Billy's posting articles celebrating the Islamo-fascism of the Taliban, who apparently represent "true masculinity" and "family values". He's already posting Putin-paid-for-propaganda- this time next week he'll probably be bowing down to the Saudi Arabian regime.

Conspiracists were always contrarians and anti-establishment, but this new brand of conspiracy is a kind of hyper-stupid contrarianism which rejects one establishment (science, intellectuals, academia, liberals, leftists, fact-checkers etc), in favor for a kind of confederacy of dunces (authoritarians, conservatives, anti-intellectuals, "gut instincts", "feelings", evangelicals, free market fundamentalists etc).
