Since Reagan, the Republicans have steadfastly continued with the strategy of selecting a candidate who possess charisma and the ability to connect with their base voters. This candidate is often one who does not possess qualities one would expect of a person seeking the highest office such as acute knowledge of the constitution, American history, foreign policy, economics, or even the English language. The candidate will come off to non-Republicans as uneducated and moronic. However, to the Republican base the candidate will be lauded as having the ability to speak with and to the common man. The ability to govern is but a side issue. And of course if the candidate is elected into office he/she is immediately surrounded by technocrats who for all intents and purposes make the decisions.
