you are right we cannot compare, but ppl in Guyana have ALOT more today then what they had in the past - maybe thats result of their families sending them everything from outside...i dont know. but i know they have plenty...
we went home in 2007 and my cousins have built beautiful homes, they make a modest wage, the children are fed and go to school - no help from us.

the "progress" that people see and comment on is a result of trading in contraband items (in the past) and the drug trade (in the present) ... and of course remittances ...
the ordinary working class man in Guyana cannot even afford to pay his rent, muchless buy land and build fancy house etc.
having a a good education in Guyana does not translate into a comfortable life ....

Ketch....when I said political reason....I meant people who are persecuted (esp physically) because of their political affiliation.
I know that politics & the economy go hand-in-hand
but......more than one party has ruled guyana in our lifetime......and it is still a third world country!
