I remembered all those frail Indian gyals fainting in that sun while marching up and down the damn road in that hot sun. Then we had to sing some stupid song about fighting an imaginary war with Venezuela. And Burham head was on everything including all our exercise books. :

Guyanese Indos typically averted police and military jobs. Culturally I think Indos view those jobs pejoratively and instead aimed for professions like legal, medical, engineering and teaching. Being in a profession was seen as more dignified and brought prestige to the family, not so with police, military or other civil service employment during the Burham days.

True. But in the Burham days there was not much room for Indos to climb the ladder in the police and military or even the civil service. Professions offered a better opportunity and of course the prestige factor can't be overestimated.

No. It didn't have anything to do with Cheddie. As I stated, it was a cultural and economic phenomena.

My Father was a Soldier in WW 11
My Grandfather died in Battle..
2 Uncles were Soldiers , as well ...
SO it was NOT a cultural tingy...
